UPDATE

Five people have been taken into custody, but not arrested after two separate fights at Western Kentucky University's South Campus and at Pearce Ford Tower on WKU's Main Campus.

The South Campus building on Nashville Road was evacuated earlier in the day following reports that one or more persons were observed in the building with weapons.

Following this, WKU PD received an unconfirmed report of shots fired in the vicinity of Pearce Ford Tower on the WKU main campus.

WKU officials say no weapons were found and no shots were fired.

Police have confirmed that there was a physical altercation not involving weapons between individuals that occurred in or near PFT, but the police are interviewing witnesses on the scene to determine if weapons were or are present, or if shots were fired.

Around 3:15pm the university's emergency alert system announced the "all-clear" signal.

We will provide additional information as it becomes available.
- WKU.edu

Classes at both South and Main campus have been canceled for tonight. However, Bowling Green Technical College classes will resume.

I am sorry but the reaction that some people are having after the fact of this incident is crazy. Any university at anytime could have an incident like this. Just because it happened to be Western Kentucky this time doesn't mean that you should start rethinking about sending your children there. I was very impressed by how Western reacted and I would have been dissapointed if they reacted any differnt.

I think after this incident that more parents are going to think twice about wanting their childen to attend WKU.

I have a son who is a senior at WKU. He has enjoyed four outstanding years there. I am very impressed at how university officials handled matters on Wednesday. They did not over-react. They had the safety of the students first and foremost. Thank you for a taking care of our children.

First of all I commend the quick action take yesterday with text messages and voice alarms. Good job! However, I feel like WKU is attempting to hide the truth. There are too many witnesses saying that yes they did see a gun and hear shots for the reports to be considered false. No gun? I'm sure that those involved had ample time to stash a weapon before police arrived. I don't believe that this is over with at all. Also, they expected us to attend classes as normal today. Really? I fail to see how they think that we should feel safe when no one has been arrested yet and those in custody have not been cooperative! And furthermore, the details of the incident are not known. It put us in danger. We have no idea what to watch out for, what places to avoid, and if or when these people will be back on campus. Officials should have suspended classes until the matter had been more thoroughly sorted through, and an investigation into the incidences confirmed our safety.

I was really scared when my school, BGHS, was on lock down.We didn't know what was going on or even people had guns. We was really scared because of the family and friends that attend WKU. Now I am really thinking twice about attending WKU or not.

I am still hearin that there was indeed shots fired if this is the case then why will western not be up front and truthful about it

Posted by: Jon Location: WKU on Oct 22, 2008 at 11:29 PM
I have to say that even though this was an unfortunate incident, it was a prime example of the proper procedure for warning the campus of the situation being extremely well executed. For that, I DO feel very safe on campus. I know that campus security and police cannot protect me from everything on campus, but they did an exemplary job of warning everyone of this incident. I did, however, not like some of the national media coverage. I believe some of the media coverage on the national news over played this incident. CNN Headline News, which is what I saw, seemed to exaggerate it: taking unconfirmed information and seemingly accepting it as fact. That seemed to cause panic and worry in the parents and relatives of students here at WKU. To reiterate: A big thumbs up to all law enforcement involved in alleviating this situation (as well as warning everyone)...GOOD JOB!

Posted by: Kevin Location: BGKY on Oct 22, 2008 at 11:16 PM
Anonymous, consider thaqt law enforcement did not know nor could they confirm an 'active shooter' situation. They took the appropriate actions. Haley, rumor isn't the same as fact - the presence of guns and reports of gunfire have not been proven.

Thank God no one was seriously hurt! The guys that put everyone's life in danger needs to do some serious jail time, and be kicked out of school. I never dreamed this would happen to Western!!!~ It is not cool to fight, we all just need to get along!! May God bless!

WKU is covering there , if you have students saying there was shots fired then hey maybe they saw guns. This is the second gun incident to happen near PFT in which guns were fired, so WKU doesn't want an investigation to take place. Tell the truth cause the students should know what takes place on there campus.

I am a student at south campus and we were still in class when the cops came to evacuate us. We were the last class out of the building and when we arrived outside the media was already there. Something is seriously wrong with that. We had no idea what was going on. We were kept back and police were “guarding” us. We had to wait over two hours to go inside and get our stuff back. Not all students received the text messages in time.

I want to say that I am thankful that know one was harmed at WKU. I will continue to keep each and everyone in my prayers. MAY GOD BE WITH EACH OF YOU.

I'm glad that western can contact students and teachers by texting them. I have two students that attend western and they both were safe. It's better to be safe then sorry! For those of you that think western overreacted shame on you. If they didn't do anything at all you would be the first in line to criticize.

Be grateful, hoax or not you have a Community to "listen" & "react" to what was reported. I wonder how long it takes to send thousands of text? My daughter is a student at South Campus and WHY was it evacuated! They should have "locked down" the building, not evacuated it! She went out and saw the law officers with guns. VERY UPSET PARENT!! Why didn't they have a LOCKED DOWN?????

I am a parent of a WKU student. I am grateful for the effectiveness of the WKU staff and of our local law enforcement. Things were dealt with professionally and mindful of the care of our family, friends and members of our local community. Those involved in such an altercation should be removed from the campus, anyone of college age should know how to handle themselves in a more appropriate way. A consequence is due here.

To continue...Texts were sent out about PFT after it had happened. So tell me..if the text system worked so well,y didn't the students get the texts right when police were dispatched so that we could have had time 2 get 2 safety??What is the point of sending us texts 2 warn us, if the event has already happened? Can someone please tell me y we were evacuated in the first place???Yes I know there were calls about guns, but the smart thing 2 do would have been 2 lock us in our classrooms;if they would have done that, the event at PFT would have never happened.Bcuz we were evacuated 4 of the suspects got out with the rest of us and went to main campus. Also,if there weren't any guns involved, please tell me y the swatt team kept running into the building of south campus and y they wouldn't let us leave until after 2:00 pm. My g-ma witnessed 4 pple get arrested at PFT and a swarm of police arrested someone in creekwood. My guess is the 5th person.Which means all 5 ppl got out during evacuation.

I am sick and tired of all the lies I have heard on t.v. today. Get the facts. I was at south campus today. I was there when the police came to evacuate us. First of all I would like to applaud our local police for being so quick to arrive today. Secondly, in my personal opinion WKU is covering something up!! The fight broke out at South Campus before 11:40, because that is when I arrived and there was not a crowd in the parking lot. The police arrived around 11:50. I know this because my class is located in front of the school and I could see the parking lot through the window. I left my classroom at 11:55 for the evacuation. Around 12:30 some police left our campus and went to the main campus because there was a call that shots were fired. Everyone is complimenting on how well the text system worked; guess what people THE TEXT SYSTEM DID NOT WORK!!!!! I was evacuated at 11:55 I did not receive a text warning me about what was going on at south campus until 12:30. The text wasn't sent

My girlfriend is in school there. This incident scared me so badly. Whats wrong with the world? Why can't people just live and love?

I def. feel that all of this is a cover up. I am a student at WKU who was in lockdown in my room for 2 and a half hours. Do you want to know how "safe" we weere? The doors to the building I was in was not even locked! They had chairs stuck inbetween the handles. One door I walked past didnt even have a chair on it! That was not safe at all in my opinion.

I send my son to school for an education. I never dream that not only I, but alot of parents have to worry about their safety on Western campus. The school can't control alot of the drama on campus. Better yet, when you see Western spend all that money on buying alot of property surounding the campus, new football stadium, etc. I can not begin to understand why they don't think enough of our children when they get alot of money for our children education. What is the problem with them putting quality cameras on the campus. My son stays at Zacrius dorm.He was walking to his dorm one night, he hears shots go off that night, he said that all he coulld do was drop. I as a parent take pride in Western, that is why my son is there. After the Katie Aldridge killing, I would of thought that Western would up-dated or install sucurty cameras all over the campus, and maybe they wouldn't have to take the task of time of trying to get all the information from students on what they witness.

This is not the first incident of a possible shooting on the campus of WKU. Didn't we just have a "possible" shooting about two months ago? Wasn't shell casings found at the scene? Come on folks - this campus is not safe. It's getting worse all the time. Fights break out, threats of violence, it's happening more and more. Maybe the Dean and other officials can down play all of this, but to us students it's very real. It's not a joke, it's not a "potential" problem, and it's not something that can be blown off, hoping it will go away. Kick these students out of school so the rest of us can get the education we came here for - God knows we're paying a high price for this education and our safety shouldn't be another price to pay.

I am a student at WKU and I for one feel safer knowing that we had an alert system to warn us of a possible threat. As soon as I got the text a messaged my friends in case they needed to know to seek shelter. I'm glad we were able to report a good outcome as opposed to there being casualties on campus because there was no alert system to begin with. WKU was acted in our best interest and I'm thankful that they and the law enforcement acted as quickly as they did.

Today was a long day today, i didnt go to school today. I had to go to the docter because i am sick! But then my brother called my mom as he was running to his car. Telling us what was going on. He was at south campus and they would not let him go. Me and my mom was talking to him though a fince. People was telling me all kinds of storys. Like there was still people in there with guns. Then we was standing there talking to these people and we see a lot of cops leave and we found out that there was shots at western. Iam 15 years old and i am just worried about my brothers safety going to school now!!! And i want to know how they are going to help this from happening again??

Posted by: David Location: Bowling Green on Oct 22, 2008 at 07:33 PM
WHOA, a lotta "he said, she said" here. When you track down the one who ACTUALLY heard/saw the shots, I think you'll find somebody in need of some attention. No shots were fired; no bullet casings were found. C'mon, stop "pulling the fire alarm". Yes, there were fights; why can't those be called in (is this high school all over again??). Sure, the message was delayed at South Campus, but the second altercation was treated as much more than a coincidence (and it was much more serious). I still say hats off to the WKU rapid-alert system, the WKU police, and local law enforcement personnel. Hopefully, they'll be able to track down the errant callers. Call a fight, a fight.

I was at Western's main campus today. I was so surpised by the way the students and public people was just walking around and driving around ingoring the alerts that was made over the intercom. People was still walking to the campus and not listening to what was going on. The roads in to campus should have been shut off. The roads leaving should have been open. I did not know this was going on the main campus. The officers did a good job. The studnets needs to take this more seriously. It if had of been a gunman they would have been a lot of people died today. Wake up students and listen to the alerts. My Daughter was at the South Campus and she is home safe but really shook up.

I'm a faculty member and I had my students in lock down from 12:40pm until the all clear was given around 3:10pm. WKU dealt with the situation appropriately. If I let my student leave class, where would they have gone? Back to their dorms which are mostly near PFT. The better option was to keep them in the classroom buildings in case there was an armed person on campus. WKU was right to send out the text messages in reponse to reported shots because those texts and the sirens were the first notices that we had in the classroom that something was wrong. WKU is still investigating the situation so we might get additional information as the investigation continues. A campus is a small town (19,000 people) and it takes good coordination to pull off what WKU did today. Good job to the administration and staff who helped keep us safe.

Posted by: Cheryl Location: Near BG on Oct 22, 2008 at 06:45 PM
The length of time it takes to receive a text varies. It isn't all about the sender. Sometimes someone will send me a text and I get it immediately and other times I don't get it for like and hour or more. Lay off Western. It appears to me that they did everything they could and should have done.

it's a shame that kids can't go to school and feel safe but I applaud the school and all of our law enforcement about how the situation was handled.

Jim and Cheri, why are you making ridiculous comments about voting for McCain and that he will keep us safe?! Your political OPINIONS have nothing to do with this incident...as a WKU student I hope we will all get the whole story on this incident soon.

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 22, 2008 at 05:28 PM
South Campus was evacuated! This is a no no in an "active shooter" situatuion. They should have "locked down" the building, not evacuated it!

Posted by: Haley Location: Morgantown on Oct 22, 2008 at 05:08 PM
before the boys brought guns to the school there had been a fight resulting in a student getting punched in the nose and coming in the building saying that he had been in a fight and that they were coming back with guns

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 22, 2008 at 05:03 PM
Once it is clear who was fighting, they should be kicked out of school for being the cause of such panic! Send a message to these wannabe gangsters that this violent behavior will not be tolerated here!

Posted by: Eileen Location: WKU on Oct 22, 2008 at 04:49 PM
about the altercation in front of PFT, one of my friends was out there when it all started and she got knocked down and had to crawl to the building and she said that just after she got in the building, she saw someone in the fight pull out a gun and heard gun shots.

WKU is covering up there were shots fired and south campus did not get the alarms

Posted by: Ryan Location: Bowling Green on Oct 22, 2008 at 04:40 PM
I'm a WKU student, here's exactly what the text messages say. "Alert: WKU-Alert Armed men have been reported on WKU South Campus. Please stay clear of the area. [12:30:27 PM]" "Alert: WKU-Alert Shots fired near PFT seek shelter immediately. [12:48:19]" "Alert: WKU Alert - This is an all clear message. All main campus and BGCC classes have been canceled for the remainder of the day. [03:04:14 PM]" Just thought some people might like to know what they said. I was feeling rather sick this morning, and stayed in bed. And was woken up flooded with calls and texts :X I'm glad everything is getting better, and I'm thankful to have the law enforcement we do.

I have to go back to wku thur. and it is going to be hard for me to do that with the thought that someone even reported shots. I will feel better it they would give us more info. on who all they have found to be part of this. I thank they sould take this week to find out all they can. I know that I need time to be able to feel safe about going back to school. I was there today and only missed it by a hr. or two. My family was so upsit b/c they thought I was there. My mom called crying. I have a little girl too and I don't know what she would do it something happpne to me.

I cannot believe that we have become so desperate for news that an apparent fight becomes headline news. The fact that an entire university was shut down is a bit of a far reach but in today's troubling times maybe even that is understandable. I just think that getting the facts before we jump in with both feet should be a requirement in the broadcast business.

Posted by: SUSAN Location: BG on Oct 22, 2008 at 04:30 PM
Does Western honestly think we are so stupid to believe that several calls were made to different places, by several different people, reporting guns/gun fire, was just a rumor? That this whole this was a rumor! Excuse me, but it is better for the students, family, and community to be aware of what is happening so people can be aware of things and take the proper precautions. If people, mainly students, are walking around a campus with their heads in a cloud, because the university is hiding things, and then something happens to a student (s), doesnt that make the university look worse, since they maybe could have done more to prevent the situation. Western needs to honest about things like this, as all universities and schools do, so rumors dont fly and people make the wrong assumptions about situations and make things worse then they really are!

I am very pleased with response by WKU officials. It was encouraging to follow such a thorough and quick response. To some it may appear to be a "false" alarm. But if someone had a semi-automatic, seconds could have made the difference between life and death. ALSO - this may turn out to be a very beneficial "trial run" of the University's security, emergency, and communication systems..... much better than any staged test event. Thank you so much to WKU staff and all the emergency personnel who came to the assistance of these students.

My husband says that ALL athletic students should have to have heart testing before they play any sports. I think ALL babies born should have heart testing (just b/c you don't have heart disease in your family doesn't mean you won't be the one to start the heart disease) its got to start somewhere. But then every 2-5 years have testing regardless if you are going to play sports or not.

Well, after the let us leave, I got on the shuttle to go back to my vehicle and as the bus began to stop at the Campbell Lane stop WKU and BG Police surrounded us with guns saying that they received another call that I fight had occurred again.

Rather this was a false alarm or not it sounds like some people could care less this is not about who is going to be the next president it is about human race it is about people who hate other people. I think the text message was a good thing good job WKU for alerting your students at least you care abou thier lifes. And one more thing why can't people get along?

Posted by: Amanda Location: Franklin on Oct 22, 2008 at 04:18 PM
I'm a student at south campus and was present at the school today. I wanted to say how shocked I am that it took over 30 minutes to receive the text messages. We were not evacuated from the building until after noon. We came out of the building to face about 15 police cars and the local newspaper already there. Why were we not evacuated sooner? I feel that the text messages should have been sent out immediately. If gunmen had been in the building, we could have been dead before we knew what was going on. We had been evacuated for nearly 30 minutes before any text message was received. A little late.

Posted by: Amanda Gilliam - Rose Location: Leitchfield on Oct 22, 2008 at 04:16 PM
"At this time, the police have been unable to find any witnesses or evidence to support earlier reports that weapons were present." What? No witnesses to back up this story? Then let's all hope the hype stops here. We wouldn't want to promote mass hysteria, would we? (m)

It's beyond me that anyone can do this at a school.. That is suppose to be a place where people can learn and better themselves.. Not fear for their lives!

The gunman rumor has still not been confirmed. With such tragedies happening at other Universities, I think WKU did what was necessary to ensure the safety of the students.

I'M VERY HAPPY NOBODY WAS INJURED WKU DONE A GOOD JOB WITH THE ALERT PLEASE LEAVE THE PRESIDENT ELECTS OUT OF THIS. UNTIL THE COURTS ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING WITH THE PEOPLE CREATING THE PROBLEMS THEN ITS JUST SOMETHING WE WILL BE FORCED TO LIVE WITH EVERYDAY. I dont know if shots were fired or not. But no one is injured and thats all that matters. Thank you for everyone who cared and prayed for our campus. It could have been worse. I am just thankful that everyone is ok.

Posted by: Heather Location: Bowling Green on Oct 22, 2008 at 03:50 PM
Yes, the students need to protect themselves but letting them carry weapons would be a mistake. It has been proven that most teenagers' brains are not fully developed and able to make serious decisions (hence why teenagers do stupid things). Putting a gun in their hands and adding chaos would be bad.

For all you people who think it has been blown out of proportion, dont you think its better to error on the side of caution. If the police didnt respond the way they did and something really bad happen all we would hear about is how they did nothing. We should be proud that our law enforcement is so prepared for this sort of crisis. I hope they get everyone that not only did this but cause it all to start. We cant let a bunch of thugs take our community over. Hope everyone is ok and am praying for the saftey of everyone

You know people leave it alone. Apparently there was reason, if your child was in danger you would want all precautions taken. If it turned out to be a false alarm on shots being fired, then thank you to WKU for pullling out all stops. Be happy you and/or your child is safe..... Come one people they have theirs students safety first and foremost...

I heard that my friends friend was in class at the time and he said he did hear gun shots. He said that 4 other guys confronted another guy and then shots ringed out. as we know no one has been hurt, but who knows if there was a gun, I think it was "gang" related, and possibilty that they will never catch the people. IMHO

I disagree with Uncle Ben. Regardless if shots were fired or not. WKU was right to send the warning out. I would much rather be safe then sorry and i'm pretty sure anyone from Virginia Tech would agree. I'm from BG and know people that go to WKU. The fact that the warning was sent is a blessing even if it's a false alarm.

I was in Tate Page Hall and watched as police set up beside our building. Then 4 officers walked down the sidewalk towards the clock tower armed with assault rifles they arrested at least one girl and it looked to be 2 more guys.

Posted by: Craig Location: EC on Oct 22, 2008 at 03:00 PM
I think this whole thing was just blown out of proportion. I was on campus and left when everything started happening. All I knew was there was police everywhere, and that I wasn't going to take any chances. But honestly I think this thing isn't nearly as big of a deal as everyone is making it.

Posted by: Ya'll are dumb on Oct 22, 2008 at 02:59 PM
First of all you stupid people this is not a situation where you express who you want to be president. Its warren county not Barren county (Marie) and there was shots my mom was on the campus and she heard them. Maddullah what do you think people won't worry.

Posted by: Uncle Ben Location: Lafayette, TN on Oct 22, 2008 at 02:57 PM
I just talked to a friend of mine in the nursing program and she said rumors were flying about hostages and all kinds of stuff. We all know how stuff gets started in situations like these. Western may have jumped the gun (no pun intended) with text messages, I don't know. That Virginia campus shooting got everyone on edge. I think it's high time students were armed at campuses around the country. It would be a major deterrent to would be lunatics.

okay seriously why do some of you think this situation calls for comments about Mccain or Obama? Seriously people are worried about family and friends keep that to political websites!

Posted by: Self Reliant on Oct 22, 2008 at 02:42 PM
Concealed Carrier and others, WKU should not have the right to bar legal carry on campus. As it did today, the only thing this does is create a pool of victims for law breakers and predators. Parents and students should contact President Ransdell and highly suggest that LICENSED concealed carry be embraced by WKU. At least we would have an opportunity to protect ourselves if such a deplorable incident reoccurs.

Posted by: Brandon Location: Bowling Green on Oct 22, 2008 at 02:42 PM
I just left. They should be letting folks return to the inside of the campus. There were campus, state and city police out there guns drawn. No one was allowed in or out. We got the all clear to leave about 40 mins. ago. As far as I know, no one was hurt. They've got one of them for sure at the time I left.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: louisville on Oct 22, 2008 at 02:41 PM
{this may be in fact a reason to re consider your Obama vote...terror is said to begin on the campus soon..} As if this incident has ANYTHING to do with Barack Obama. What is wrong with you? Did Barack hire armed men to come to WKU and shoot people? NO, so why are you going to try to correlate people and happenings that have no connection or relevance to each other. The problem is not OBAMA, the problem is the ease at which people can obtain firearms and ammunition in this country.

Posted by: Tammy Location: WKU on Oct 22, 2008 at 02:41 PM
Why is it the law stops students who are licensed with a handgun carry permit from carrying their weapon on campus? The only thing that law does is allow the perpetrator to bring their weapons on campus and stops the law abiding citizen from protecting themselves and those around them. When getting a hand gun carry permit one must pass a background check and certify in local laws and regulations. This does not make any sense to me. Once more giving the upper hand to the criminal. Next you'll see him/her with a reduced charge and back on the street to commit another crime.

The Panic of the people outside the campus before the facts are presented show the weakness Americans possess today. This is why the future of this country is gloom, it does no good to be so pessimistic in the outcome here without the true facts in place..perhaps we need to stop and gather our thought before carefully proceeding. Life has many dangers ahead and you must stay self composed , if not for yourself but perhaps to your loved ones! We may all feel a bit foolish when the truth surfaces. but at least give the truth a chance.

He may be wrong about a lot of stuff, but he's not making a fool of himself on a stupid blog site. Please, just stop it. On CNN, statement that South Campus is clear, lockdown is to Main Campus. A suspect has been taken in for questioning? Same reports on WKYT (CBS) Lexington TV station and WAVE 3 from Louisville. Stated no reports of injuries, but to steer clear of the area, other adjacent schools are on lockdown as precaution. KY State Police, BG Police and WKU police still on scene.

WHAT! Are you freaking serious? WBKO just announced there were no gunmen on campus. WBKO just released information stating there was a simple physical altercation with no weapons. How could a simple fist fight turn into such a blown out rumor of 4 gunmen? I do however thank God no one was injured and there WASN'T anyone wielding a gun.

Posted by: Steve Location: BG on Oct 22, 2008 at 02:18 PM
Deb Wilkins from WKU was just on Fox News. She said that there was a fist fight on south campus and regarding PFT;WKU wants to air on the side of caution so they sent out the alert, but at this time there are no injuries reported.

If you're having trouble reaching your loved ones, don't worry. Something is up with the towers---no calls are coming into my cell, and to make a call take 2-5 tries.

Posted by: Concealed Carrier Location: BG on Oct 22, 2008 at 02:17 PM
The only laws against carrying concealed on school grounds pertains to public schools. Although most, if not all, college campuses have the "No concealed deadly weapons" stickers posted on the entrances, there is no law preventing you from carrying. If it were discovered you were carrying, they have the right to ask you to leave. If you refuse, they can have you escorted off premises by authorities. Guns on campus scare people; this is a prime example why, but I'd rather have someone trained and certified carrying a weapon than some thug. And you know they already are. I know there are those that will disagree with the idea of carrying a firearm. But, to get a CCDW permit you have to pass a FBI background check, pass a test on state and or federal firearms laws and pass an accuracy test on a firing range. In a nutshell, you have to be a responsible, law abiding (US) citizen to get one.

Posted by: Olivia Location: Bowling Green on Oct 22, 2008 at 02:16 PM
Okay, this is what I have heard. Everything started on south campus, students weren't allowed into the building, they were putting everyone there on a bus, a friend of mine wouldn't get on the bus becuz they wouldn't tell her where they were taking them. A teacher at one of the Warren Co Public schools heard there were 4 people shot, but thats just rumor. All Warren Co schools are on lockdown. There were "shots" heard on main campus at PTF. The cops do have "south" campus on lockdown as well as cops around PFT. Area business & schools are being told to lock their doors per a doctors office on that side of town. I wk at a medical facility & we were expecting an ambulance pt but got a ph call stating they couldn't transport becuz they had all the ambulances up at WKU. You guys are in our prayers. Hope this helps. You never know how much is truth and how much is rumor.

Posted by: Albert N. Milliron Location: Columbia, SC on Oct 22, 2008 at 01:54 PM
The reports I am getting all around is that there were reports of shots fired but no conformation. No Confirmation on gunman. There was a fight on campus shortly after so folks are conflicting the fight with gun man. A spokesman from the school has reported no conformation or visual of ANY gunman. I think as things go... folks have confused the two events. It very well could have been a backfire car and folks saw the on cappus fight and put them together and made conclusions.

I just left south campus. You know how rumors fly but word is that there is a hostage in south campus and there were shots fired at main campus at Pierce Ford Tower. For those who don't know, south and main campus is about a mile from each other. Supposedly one student was mauled by about 20 other students, ripping his hair out. Someone said he was going home to get guns and come back and get revenge. Like I said, this is the word going around and who knows if it is true or not. Please pray for all involved! It's hard to get through on cell phones with so many calls but keep trying.. Alot of students had to leave phones indside the building also. Just keep trying and praying

Posted by: Trevor Location: Bowling Green on Oct 22, 2008 at 01:53 PM
We are in lockdown at Bowling Green High School. Gary Fields, our principal, made the announcement earlier and we have every single door locked, we're on lockdown.

Posted by: Brooke Location: NKY on Oct 22, 2008 at 01:53 PM
I don't understand why they are saying that the shootings are on south campus at PFT because PFT is on the main campus... not the south campus. I wish they would clarify. All the news sites seem to have some facts mixed up.

I think they mean the south end of the main campus, where the tower is. South campus usually refers to the BG Community College area out on 31W

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 22, 2008 at 01:44 PM
Even if you have a license for a concealed weapon you can't go have it within 100 yds. (i think)of a school, for safety of the students.

According to MSNBC there were shots fired and up to 4 gunmen at South Campus, near some tower. But other than that, no one has any info.

Posted by: WKU Student Location: WKU on Oct 22, 2008 at 01:40 PM
At least they're letting people on campus again. You know, they don't really even keep us updated ... But the WBKO van is here, so you should have some coverage soon.

Police are at both locations; PFT and South Campus. WKU is said to be on lockdown as shots were reportedly fired on campus near PFT. The South campus threat was due to two reported gun men. Both are under investigation. WBKO has lifted the ticker alerting the public to seek shelter.

this si the second incident in two months. wku's howard bailey refused to discuss the first incident with me--a parent of a freshman. the tried to keep it quiet. in reality, they have more than a few thugs on that campus, and ignored the warning signs from the first shooting incident.
