A Bowling Green native who became the first woman awarded a silver star in operation Iraqi freedom is among those honored at Warren County's veteran courtyard.
Kentucky National Guard Sergeant Leigh Ann Hester from the 617th military police company was honored with a Silver Star in 2005.
She was nominated for the award after dozens of insurgents opened fire on the convoy she and other National Guard troops were escorting a year and a half ago.
This morning, the third generation service member received a brick along with her grandfather, World War Two veteran Oran Solinger, and her uncle, Vietnam veteran Carl Solinger.
Brick laying ceremonies are held on a regular basis as warren county officials continue to grow the memorial.
Dozens of families were on hand this morning for the ceremony honoring a number of area servicemen and women.
