Alex's Lemonade Stand

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. That's exactly what Riley Miller is doing.

Riley and her friends began having lemonade stands to raise money for pediatric cancer research last year.

The idea began in 2000, when four-year old cancer patient, Alex Scott opened a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure.

Alex passed away in 2004, but her goal lives on through children like Riley

Riley's infant brother passed away from cancer, but his memory still lives in her heart.

Riley says: "I didn't see him a lot, but he would hold onto your finger and wouldn't let go."

While he was in the hospital, Riley and her family learned about Alex Scott's mission to help find a cure for pediatric cancer by raising money from lemonade stands.

Riley's mom, Carol Miller, says: "We met neighbors we never knew that would come up and say 'I had a granddaughter with cancer' and we met so many people who have been touched with not only cancer, but pediatric cancer."

Riley's entire family saw firsthand how cancer can affect children. They say the community provided a lot of support and the lemonade stands are just one way to give back.

Carol says: "When our son was sick we were separated for six months and this community overwhelmed us with kindness and we're always searching for ways to give back."

This year Riley has dedicated her stand to Abby Cummings, a Lost River Elementary Student, who's currently fighting cancer.

At the kick-off event on July 7, Riley and her friends raised over $750. They've also raised $555 online.
