Is Renting Outpacing Home Ownership?

They say a "home is where you make it", but the mortgage crisis has forced many people to wonder where exactly to make that "home."

It seems many people believe right now it may be easier to rent their home, rather than buy it.

After calling several local property managers here in bowling green WBKO found out that renting an apartment is quickly becoming the cheaper, less-troubling alternative to buying a home.

So while it may be the American dream to live in a two-story house that you may one day own, many people are taking more of a wait-and-see approach.

Kelli Calebs and her family are still getting acclimated to their apartment.

The family decided on living in an apartment after coming to Bowling Green from Ohio.

"We didn't want to make any hasty decisions and we were not familiar with the area at all," says Calebs.

So far she says she happy with the decision.

"Its given us time to think about what we want and get a feel for the housing in this area," Calebs notes.

"I would say its probably been a fewer number of people wanting to buy homes lately so we are seeing more in apartments longer than they would otherwise," says Chandler Park Apartments property manager, Marita Minnich.

Minnich believes more people are starting to look at apartment life differently.

She says,"I think that as the conditions of the economy remain uncertain, we'll have a few more people decide that they do want to stay in an apartment longer just until they know how everything's going to play out or how their jobs are going to be influenced based on the economy."

Minnich cites the lower cost of a monthly rent over a mortgage payment as one reason for people to turn to apartment living.

"I think its hard for a lot of people to come up with down payments and stuff like that for a home and lock themselves into those house payments right now," Calebs says.

Calebs eventually wants to move her family into a house here in Bowling Green, but for right now she's happy where she's at.

Minnich also says that not having to pay property taxes, in addition to the flexibility of only having to live in an apartment for a year can factor greatly into people's decisions right now.
