Recently, the Kentucky Supreme Court ruled the Louisville Fire Department had failed to pay its employees all of the overtime they were owed.
Now the decision could have an impact on fire departments throughout the Commonwealth, even here in Bowling Green.
Right now, the Bowling Green Fire Department, along with city officials, are going through their own records to determine if firefighters here are getting their "just dues."
Firefighters have a very different pay scale since they work longer hours than many other jobs.
"Our firefighters work 56 hours and of course 16 hours of that is overtime," says BGFD Assistant Chief of Training, Todd Napier.
According to a report released by the Kentucky League of Cities, Bowling Green would owe its firefighters nearly $1.4 million dollars in back-pay for the past five years since the original Court of Appeals ruling.
Napier says it's too early to tell what, if anything, the city may owe because the investigation is in the infant stages.
"We're at a very base stage of it. I don't see any big changes other than Chief Johnson is aware of it and is speaking with city officials," says Napier.
Right now, Napier says there is no timetable for the inquiry's conclusion.
