BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) -- In Argentina, an ex-police commander has committed suicide in front of television cameras as he was about to be arrested for alleged human rights violations.

Mario Ferreyra said goodbye to his wife before as he raised a .45-caliber revolver to his head and shot himself in the temple.

Ferreyra took his life Friday as national authorities arrived at his home to arrest him. He was accused in connection with the disappearance, torture and death of dissidents during Argentina's so-called "dirty war" in the late 1970s and early 80s.

He had just finished an interview with a cable TV station when he took out the gun and fired it.

The TV station later broadcast the images.

During Argentina's military dictatorship, thousands of people were made "to disappear" for their association with suspected dissidents.
