The head of the United Auto Workers says the United States cannot let one of "the big three" collapse.
Ron Gettelfinger went on CNN's Late Edition today to tell Congress and the country why it's so important for the government to rescue the auto industry.
Gettelfinger says the nation cannot afford to see these major companies fail.
"This is not a bailout, this is a loan -- bridge loan that will get us through until we can take a longer term look at exactly what needs to be done in the industry."
Car makers want 25-billion dollars from Uncle Sam.
Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors will submit plans to Congress Tuesday on how they would use the money.
Members of Congress remain deeply divided on the aid.
