According to the YMCA drownings took the lives of more than four thousand people nationwide last year. Many of those drownings could have been prevented with a few, basic water safety tips.
That's why an elementary school is promoting a water safety program. Fourth graders from Stevenson Elementary are participating in a water safety program. The class is taught by instructors from Russellville's Parks and Recreation Department. The students have learned some basic swimming skills, how to float, and have practiced using flotation devices.
The students say they have been looking forward to the class from the beginning of the year. Each student that completes the program will receive a water safety certificate. Instructors say they hope some of the tips the students learn will hopefully save lives in the future.
