The Bowling Green City Commission on Tuesday afternoon approved the hiring of an architectural firm and a construction management firm to oversee the expansion of the Bowling Green Police Dept.'s Headquarters.

The current headquarters building is only six years old, but because of budget cuts was already to small to meet the department's needs when it moved in to the building.

"This new expansion will give us probably a 20-year progression for servicing our police department like it really needs to be with all its space needs," said Bowling Green Mayor Sandy Jones.

The expansion plan calls for the project to be completed in three phases, with the first phase concentrating on the existing structure, and building 17,000 square feet of new space.

"We're gonna do some renovation of the existing building to relieve some problems we have with space, with communications, and with evidence and just crowding of office space, said BGPD Chief Bill Waltrip.

The plan has been "fast-tracked" by the city, and Chief Waltrip says he plans to sit down with city engineers this week to hammer out a specific timeline for construction to begin.
