We Card Training Program

Area retailers participated in We Card training.

The purpose of the program is to use interactive techniques and
role-playing to teach retail owners and employees how to prevent
under-age tobacco sales.

Topics discussed were the best way to check an ID, how real world situations could be handled, and ideas on how to train employees.

"We want to do the right thing. We don't want to sell tobacco to minors. I mean it's the right thing to do and it's not only the law, but it is the right thing to do and retailers want to be responsible in their communities and do the right thing", said Linda McKenna, the training director for We Card.

We Card is sponsored by the Kentucky Coalition for Responsible Tobacco Retailing.

According to www.wecard.org , the We Card program exists because the FDA indicates that as an average among U.S. retailers, one in every four attempts by a person 15 to 17-years-old to purchase cigarettes over the counter results in sale. Also an estimated 690 million packs of cigarettes are sold illegally to person under the legal age to buy cigarettes each year nationwide.

Here are some other We Card facts that contribute to the driving force behind the program.

  • More than 80 percent of regular adult smokers began smoking before the age of 18.
  • Every day in the United States more than 2,000 persons under the age of 18 begin smoking cigarettes, and one-third of those persons will one day die from a tobacco-related disease.
  • It has been shown that the younger a person begins smoking, the more likely it is that he or she will be unable to quit in later life and will suffer a disease attributable to tobacco use.
  • Recent studies indicate that youth demonstrate signs of addiction after smoking only a few cigarettes.
  • More than 400,000 Americans die each year from diseases caused by tobacco use.
