All five of the Bowling Green City Elementary Schools are participating in the Safe Routes to School program.
Governor Ernie Fletcher presented the 196 thousand dollar check to the district.
The program encourages children who live close to school to walk or bike.
The money will be used for structural improvements and education and outreach programs.
The program will begin in the Bowling Green School District later this fall.
The initiative is a joint partnership between the Greenways Commission, The Barren River District Health Department, Bowling Green Citizen Information and Assistance, Bowling Green Public Works, and the City-County Planning Commission.
Governor Fletcher says Kentucky is one of three states to implement the program.
