The cities of Bowling Green and Kawinishi, Japan will remain sister cities in name only for the foreseeable future. The two cities have been sister cities for nearly a decade, but prioritization in Bowling Green's budget has caused the city to stop investing human or financial resources in the exchange program.
The two cities have swapped delegations over the history of their relationship, but in recent years the majority of travel has been Japanese delegations visiting the South Central Kentucky area.
Mayor Sandy Jones says she believes the money and time that has been invested in hosting those delegations should instead be spent on promoting diversity within the community.
Jones stresses that the program is not dead, but says she doesn't expect to invest in the program for the foreseeable future.
