HARPERSVILLE, Ala. (AP) -- Authorities are following a trail of clues, trying to locate an Indiana businessman who they say may have tried to fake his own death by crashing his plane.
Investigators in Alabama searched the woods where Marcus Schrenker apparently bailed out Sunday night and discovered that he had stashed a red motorcycle in a storage unit in the area just the day before. The local police chief says Schrenker's had plenty of time to get away and believes he's left the country.
Schrenker has been dealing with a growing list of financial problems, among them an investigation of his financial management businesses and his wife's divorce filing. Authorities in Florida now say he'll face charges for allowing his plane to crash into a residential area.
One of Shenker's Indiana neighbors says he received an e-mail from him that he feared was a suicide note. In it, Schrenker claims the crash was an accident, that the pilot side window imploded and the lack of oxygen led him to make a "terrible" decision to bail out.
His mother, meanwhile, says she hasn't heard from him -- but she thinks he's alive.
