Breathitt County Judge-executive Lewis Warrix said there was (what he termed) " ... really, really bad weather" in Jackson at the time of the crash. He said there was heavy rain, wind and fog. He added, "It was just horrible weather."

Authorities say the Cessna 401 was destroyed upon impact and bodies were seen on the ground.

Published reports in Texas say Jason Christie of Wichita Falls, Texas had recently purchased the plane and had acquired his pilot's license within the past 18 months. Passengers on the plane included Christie's wife, Sherri; her 15-year-old daughter, Britney Gossett; and the couple's three children: Three-year-old Holden; an unidentified one-year-old and Kendall, a newborn. Jason and Sherri Christie owned and operated Guarantee Title Incorporated, a property title business in Wichita Falls.

The published reports say the family was en route to Middleburg, Va., where Britney Gossett was to attend the Foxcroft School, a private boarding school for girls. Their immediate destination was the Wendell Ford Airport at Hazard.
