The Edmonson County School Board is considering a random drug testing policy to be implemented this school year. The Board heard a first reading of the new policy at its' June meeting.
The new policy would require students who participate in extracurricular activities and those who drive themselves to school to, along with their parents, sign a consent form allowing the school system to randomly test them for drugs throughout the school year.
Only one parent showed up for a special forum on the first reading of the new rules, but the Board hopes to hear more community input at its monthly meeting on July 14th, when the new policy will receive a second reading.
Funds to pay for the new testing would come from the school system's general fund, and School Board Member Tommy Ritter believes if the measure passes, testing could begin as early as Sept. 1.
The Allen County School system is the only other system in the South Central Kentucky area with a similar drug testing policy in place.
