Western Kentucky University officials discussed their five-year master plan to members of Bowling Green's City Commission and Planning Commission.

The plan includes several changes designed to ease conflict between vehicles and the thousands of on-campus pedestrians.

Some changes include:

  • Expansion of green space
  • Closure of some cross streets
  • Converting Big Red Way back into a two-way street w/medians
  • A $10 million expansion of the parking garage set to begin this year
  • A new Greek Village complex designed to relocate and centralize fraternities and sororities.
  • New parking lots

Andy Gillies, Executive Director of the BG Planning Commission said the commission has had several zoning decisions affecting property within the periphery of Western's campus within the last several years, and hopes Thursday night's meeting will help the commission in future decision-making.

Western officials also revealed that the new Mass Media building and the Downing Student Center will both be open by the start of classes on Aug. 18.
