The State Public Service Commission has overruled the group that manages telephone numbers in North America, granting a Bellsouth request for a new dialing prefix for Western Kentucky University. The order grants Bellsouth the 958 prefix, which can spell out WKU. It will be used exclusively by Western for up to 10,000 sequential numbers.
University officials say numbers with the 745 prefix have been exhausted. Bellsouth initially requested the prefix in early July, but the US administrator of the North American Numbering Plan Administration denied it. The administration said Bellsouth’s utilization rate for numbers in that area was less than the 75 percent required to get a new prefix.
