WKU Workers May Have Been Exposed to Asbestos

Four WKU Facilities Dept. employees may have been exposed to dangerous levels of asbestos earlier this week. The workers were removing ceiling tiles in the vacant center section of the mall when they noticed what appeared to be asbestos material, and called in the university's Environmental Health and Services Department to test the tiles.

Both preliminary and secondary test results showed twice the legal limit of asbestos present, and the affected area has been cordoned off since then.

There are several businesses located in the left and right sections of the mall, but WKU Facilities Director says they should not be concerned because the mall was built in three sections, and firewalls separate the business areas from the vacant section.

Western will now have to present a remediation plan to the State for approval, and will hire professional contractors to clean up the area.
