Chris, You're right about one thing - fire protection for us who live in the county is non exsistant. If your house catches fire and you live in the county FORGET IT -the volunteers will not arrive in time to save your house, their only purpose will be to prevent the fire from sprending. If you want to have real fire protection either move to the city or get your checkbook out! In order for elected officials to start a county fire department with strategically situated fire houses throughout the county, taxes would have to be increased drastically - In other words it'll never happen. For now we should all appreciate our volunteer firefighters for putting their lives in harms way for all of us in the county.
This story should scare everyone that depends upon a volunteer fire department. Simpson county had more fire than they could handle. They then had to call for help asking 3 departments from Warren County to come and help. Im glad they did, but who was left to protect us. The Warren county fire departments are so few in numbers now they when Alvaton has a home fire they have to call for 3 other departments for help and still not able to much in saving ones home. So with those few that went to simpson county, who was left to protect your home or my home. NO ONE. I say that again... NO ONE. Now if that dont scare you, then your in a dream land. Wait until your home is lost to fire and your personal items are lost forever as you stand there looking at your fountaion. Something has to be done to ensure we have trained and staffed fire departments in the county. The way things are currently handled just isnt acceptable.
