LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Two Indiana police officers shot in an ambush at a motel last week are recovering at a Kentucky hospital.

Relatives of Jeffersonville Cpl. Dan Lawhorn and Patrolman Keith Broady said the officers face a long recovery but may eventually return to police work. They are being treated at University Hospital in Louisville.

Lawhorn's wife, Dana, said one of her husband's colleagues used a dog leash as a tourniquet, another tended to him and a third reassured him.

The two officers were investigating suspected drug activity at the motel across the Ohio River from Louisville when Broady was shot in the chest and Lawhorn was shot in the leg.

The suspected shooter held police at bay for hours outside a Louisville home before killing himself.
