The Board of Adjustments has approved a zoning change allowing the BG Humane Society to move forward with plans to build a new facility.

The new Adoption Center will be a 5,100 sq. ft. facility designed to house up to 60 dogs and 40 cats. The animals deemed most adoptable (in relation to their physical health and temperament) will be placed in the center, deemed a "no-kill" facility. Such a designation means once an animal is placed in the adoption center, it will not be euthanized. The Humane Society will continue its policy of euthanizing ill-tempered or physically sick animals.

The new facility comes with a price tag of $500,000, money the society hopes to raise through private donations, and an adopt-a-thon set to begin soon.

Construction is slated to begin Aug. 11, and be completed within 90 days, according to Humane Society director Bill Hildreth.
