Mister Smiley Plates

"Kentucky, it's that Friendly" is a slogan that can be seen all over the state, but maybe it's not really a theme in Kentucky. Ever since the "Mister Smiley" plate debuted in December it's gotten a less than happy reception.

Officials at the Warren County Clerk's Office say many drivers have complained about the new standard plate. In fact, they say since "Mister Smiley" debuted specialty plate sales have gone up by twenty five percent.

The plates were designed by a committee comprised of representatives from the Transportation Cabinet, Tourism Cabinet, and Governor's Office. Given the state's tight budget situation, Gov. Patton says a new plate is not possible before the next scheduled redesign in 2008.
