The city of Greenville in Muhlenberg County is getting a facelift.

That comes after more than $100,000 in federal funding went to the city today.

Governor Steve Beshear presented the check this afternoon.

"This downtown is sparkling already, but it's going to be even better," assured Gov. Steve Beshear.

It's an investment that's part of an effort to revive the city's look.

"Today I'm very happy to assist Greenville's revitalizing efforts by presenting a $130,000 check provided by the Federal Transportation Enhancement Grant," the governor said.

The project called "Streetscape" is working to beautify downtown Greenville.

"During these hard economic times, it is important to do the smaller things that make a big difference in the long run and revitalizing your downtown is going to make a difference in the long run," Gov. Beshear said.

The new funding will replace old traffic light poles with new ones, completing Phase One of the city's redevelopment efforts.

And it's money residents and city officials say they're thankful for.

"With this day and time, I think it's good to have people pull together and stand together, and I think it means a lot to the community," said Tony Flener, a Greenville resident of 25 years.

"When you can get the governor to come to your county six times since he's been in office, it shows he does care about western Kentucky and Muhlenberg County," added Muhlenberg County Judge-Executive Rick Newman.

And with the recent ice storm slamming the county, Beshear says this is money that will give the city an economic boost.

"It's going to bring people back downtown, it's going to bring businesses back downtown, and for this community and for this state, those are very vital steps to take," the governor said.

Greenville was awarded more than $350,000 in 2007 for the renovation and beautification of sidewalks along the downtown's South Main Street.

State Senator Jerry Rhoads and Representative Brent Yonts spoke at this afternoon's event.

Rep. Yonts say the funding has been very beneficial to the city of Greenville.
