Vicky Logan is the proud working mother of six, but that's a title she may soon have to alter. State cuts in Medicaid funding are forcing her to contemplate quitting her job and going on welfare in order to be able to care for her autistic and mentally handicapped son Brian.
Because his physical disabilities are caused by a mental handicap, Brian does not qualify for care in several local adult day care centers with openings. Instead, he qualifies for specific types of facilities that have a waiting list of near 2,300 people.
Medicaid officials say they plan to open up 500 additional slots and assign them on a severity-of-need basis, but Vicky says if she doesn't resolve her situation soon, she may be forced to leave the workforce.
