Monday area politicians announced an assistance program called Homeownership Initiative that will help low income families buy a house. The program lets families put their city housing assistance vouchers toward homeownership. Families must be considered self-sufficient by the city's housing department before they can qualify.
Program supporters say it really gives families a leg up in life. U.S. Representative Ron Lewis, a supporter of the program, says this complements President Bush's new goal to increase the number of minority homeowners by at least 5.5 million before the end of the decade.
