Doug Hawkins was appointed the new Police Chief at a special called city commission meeting at the L & N Depot Friday morning.
Hawkins is in his 16th year on the force. He was selected for his work ethic, creativity, and problem-solving abilities.
Former Police Chief Bill Waltrip was on the force when Hawkins was hired in 1990, "I believe he'll be a consensus builder,” Waltrip says. "I think he'll listen and then make a decision. And I think he understands the chief's role is to take all that information. But at the end of the day the Chief of Police has to make that decision."
Chief-designate Hawkins says he wants to use new technology, like mobile data terminals and digital video cameras, to make the department more efficient in the future.
