Public Defenders

A new survey shows that Kentucky might have more public defenders, but the caseloads for each are still high. The survey shows that the hiring of 41 public defenders last month has resulted in the attorney's average number of cases to drop.

Kentucky still exceeds the national standards. The standard recommends no more than 400 misdemeanor cases, 150 felony, or 200 juvenile cases per year.

The leader of Kentucky's Department of Public Advocacy says the average case load is 468. The goal is to get below 400 cases.
