With a 7 to 2 vote the Hilltopper Football team will be packing up their bags and heading to 1-A Football.
However, the vote by the Regents to make the move wasn't necessarily a smooth one.
The board opened up the floor for discussion before voting on the proposal.
Faculty Regent Robert Dietle voiced several concerns, including one that at a previous board meeting President Ransdell had said that academics had received funding from the board and now it was athletics turn.
During Dietle's comments, fellow Regent Laurence Zielke made a motion to cease discussion and vote.
The board voted two-thirds to proceed with the vote.
The regents then voted 7 to 2 to pass with one abstaining.
Board of Regents Chairman Earl Fischer says the move will be a good one for everyone...not just football fans.
"Well I see it as really affecting the spirit of Western. There's not anything that you can compare a move like this to as far as creating spirit on the campus."
"Football is like improving residence halls, improving campus restaurants, building parking structures...all of the things that effect the quality of life on our campus. None of those things in and of themselves affect academic quality but combined all of those create a quality of life and spirit and energy of pride on a campus," says Western President Gary Randsell.
Ransdell also says he's ready now to "turn the page" from the move and really focus in on improving academic issues.
