Pelosi To Be First Female Speaker of the House

Democrats have selected the representatives who will lead the house when the party takes over in January 2007. As expected, the democrats chose Rep. Nancy Pelosi as the Speaker of the House, making her the nation’s first female to hold that post.i>

Representative Pelosi stated, “What an honor it is to be nominated by my colleagues to be the Speaker of the House. Everyone is very excited about the thought that I am the first woman speaker. I’m just absolutely delighted that we have a democratic speaker and a democratic majority in the House of Representatives.”

Current Minority Whip, Steny Hoyer was chosen to become House Majority Leader despite Pelosi’s backing of John Murtha.

South Carolina Rep. James Clyburn will become Majority Whip and Congressman Rahm Emanuel of Illinois was elected Caucus Chairman.

House republicans pick their minority leaders Friday.
