Dahlias, petunias, marigolds, and even festive sprigs of evergreen and small cacti adorned the tables at the standard flower show, “My Old Kentucky Home”, Thursday afternoon.

The event is presented by The Cardinal Council of Garden Clubs, which consists of five area garden clubs: Bicentennial Garden Club, Bowling Green Garden Club, Scottsville Garden Club, Two Creeks Garden Club, and Warren East Garden Club.

Exhibits and displays range in size from small herbs arranged in unique containers to large, blossoming, artistic designs that were several feet tall – including Edith Nelson’s prize winning design, “By The Glimmer Of The Moon”.

“Gardening is something everyone can enjoy”, explains Alice Kummer. Kummer has served as director of the Dogwood District for 2 years. The Dogwood District encompasses all garden clubs that range from Louisville to Franklin. In addition to the Dogwood District, Kummer is also a member of the local Bowling Green Garden Club.

“It’s a good lifetime hobby that you can start when you are young, and keep going with it throughout your life. It really is fun and enjoyable”, says Kummer.

Kummer says that this week is National Garden Week, and that the regional garden clubs host the annual flower show each year during National Garden Week.

There are three main divisions that are represented at the flower show – horticulture, design, and special exhibits. Flowers and plants are showcased in the horticulture category, and creativity and imagination are showcased in the design category. Attendants can even learn about the conservation of rain water and how to attract songbirds through educational exhibits.

“My Old Kentucky Home” flower show is free and open to the public. It will continue today until 5 p.m. and tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church School Gymnasium. The school is located at 553 Ashmoor Avenue, right off Nashville Road.
