Area middle and high school students are singing about the importance of nutrition.
Linda Hawkins, an author from Butler County, Ky., wrote a series of nutrition books for children. She then decided to have a poetry contest for students across the state. The winning entries were turned into a song.
Hawkins said she wanted to teach children about eating healthy.
"The thing right now that we're dealing so much with is obesity, unhealthy eating in children. [We need to help] them increase their consumption of fruits and vegetables," Hawkins said.
Hawkins also said by putting the books on CD and putting the poetry to music, it makes it convenient for parents and children.
"I guess, you know when you've got something toe tapping, moving something they enjoy it. Then they put it into their brain and remember it so much better," Hawkins said.
"Eat Right to Win", one of the poems the students were singing was written by Mary Johnson Howard of Butler County.
The CD will be released in March 2007 to correspond with National Nutrition Month. To download and listen to the song "Be Like You" click here.
