The Senate has confirmed Robert Gates to replace Donald Rumsfeld as Defense Secretary.
Robert Gates spent almost all Dec. 6, 2006, answering questions before the Senate Armed Service Committee. During the hearings, Gates did raise some eyebrows by saying the United States isn't winning the war in Iraq.
The Committee voted unanimously to recommend his confirmation. The Senate confirmed Gates Dec. 7, 2006. Upon confirmation, Gates plans to travel to Iraq to consult with U.S. commanders.
