Assisting Abandoned Newborns

In the coming weeks, child protection workers will be helping to educate fire and police departments throughout the area, on how to help abandoned newborns.

Under Kentucky's "Safe Infants Act" passed in April 2002, parents or others are able to leave a newborn baby with EMS personnel, firefighters or police officers up to 72 hours after birth at a hospital.

To make sure every community can provide a safe and legal option for child abandonment, staff at the Barren River Service Region of the Cabinet for Families and Children are passing out packets to emergency personnel, with instructions on what to do when an abandoned newborn is left is their care.

Each packet contains forms, brochures and an ankle bracelet that is to be placed on the abandoned newborn.

At least six infants have been abandoned under the Kentucky law since it was passed.
