Tammy Embry's playschool, in Leitchfield, was recently chosen by the Kentucky Department of Education to be a part of a $91,000 grant to help children develop better habits.
The grant looks at everything from physical activity to the snacks the students eat.
"Just to get them involved in more physical stuff and playing outside instead of just sitting around doing nothing," said Tammy Embry, the owner.
The center was one of six childcare programs across the state chosen to participate in the Team Nutrition grant.
The Kentucky Department of Education and Save The Children are giving training and tools to the centers to encourage physical activity and healthy eating.
"They had given us some tools to work with the children to help get them moving, hula hoops, some jump ropes, some cones, balance beams, and different things," said Tammy.
Tammy hopes her students take these tips and tools with them as they grow older.
"They want to get children off of the junk food and more involved in fruits and vegetables and how important they are in your diet everyday," said Tammy.
Tammy also hopes this program will spread beyond her students. She wants the kids to take what they've learned home to their families.
The grant runs through September of 2008. Tammy says her playschool will continue to implement these tips even after the project ends.
