Miss USA, Tara Conner, will get to complete her year-long reign which now includes a stint in rehab.
At a news conference today, Miss Universe Organization co-owner, Donald Trump announced he’ll let Conner keep her crown. He said he’s always been a believer in second chances.
“She knows ... If she makes even the slightest mistake from here on out ... She will be immediately replaced,” Trump said.
Conner told Trump she won’t let him down. Conner had recently come under accusations of underage drinking in New York bars.
Last Thursday, Dec. 14 began a terrible time for Tara Conner’s family. Word out of New York said that Conner was drinking, partying and engaging in questionable behavior.
“ ... A nightmare. Of course we were hoping none of it was true but still she knows she’s got family here,” said Mitzi Conner, Tara’s aunt. She also said neither she nor Tara’s parents knew what Donald Trump was going to say today.
“No we didn’t know. We were just hoping,” Mitzi said. People anxiously watched the announcement today in Conner’s hometown of Russell Springs, Ky. Tears and sighs of relief followed. Many watched the live announcement. Some were heard clapping when it was said Conner would keep her crown.
“I think it’s wonderful. I mean she’s really a sweet girl. Everyone makes mistakes. She’s still our girl,” said Jinece Goodman, a Russell Springs resident.
As Miss USA, Tara’s platform was breast cancer. Now people here say what has happened to her in the last couple of months could give her another platform in helping young people with the temptations of underage drinking.
Conner’s faults are those other young people say they could very easily fall into.
“She probably did what any other teen would do ... What I would do. Go out, experiment life, see what everything is about,” Tara’s friend Sarah Powell said.
“We’re sure she is going to turn this around and make it an even bigger thing than before. She will be a better Miss USA, than she would have been to begin with,” said Carrie James of Chantilly Formal Wear.
“This could possibly teach other girls in the future a good lesson,” Mitzi said. A lesson Mitzi Conner hopes her own daughter pays attention to, should she follow in her cousin’s footsteps.
Trump said at the conference today, pressures from the “whirlwind of New York” were too much for the small-town beauty queen.
