Saturday is the 4th of July, and that means one thing.

Fireworks displays.

The Barren River Lake State Resort is planning a spectacular show, but there was a time the show wasn't a certainty.

"The usual 4th of July for us is just to stay at home and watch the fireworks," says Jessica Walden.

The Walden family's traveled down from Louisville with one purpose in mind.

"We came down here this time to watch the fireworks," Jessica says.

The Waldens have gotten wind there was possibility they wouldn't have caught the display.

"There have been budget cuts and a lot of things happening, so the state, in an effort to save money for the state budget, cut the funding for fireworks for the state parks that have it," explains recreation supervisor Lisa Deavers.

"It was a shock to me," Jessica remarks. "We came down here to watch the fireworks."

They will.

Staff at the resort say they've been able to pick up the show and bring it back.

"We were very fortunate that the Friends of Barren River Lake, which is a 501c3 organization, stepped forward and have worked diligently to raise funds to have the fireworks show here at Barren River Lake," explains Deavers.

The organization raised over $8,000 by contacting local businesses and individuals.

"It is the same show we've had here for years, so for the guests coming in to the park, there will be no difference from years past," says Deavers.

That's good news for the Waldens.

"This is a way of giving back and thanks to the Friends of Barren River, we can do that this year," Deavers concludes.

A list of the people and businesses who donated to the Friends of Barren River Lake will be posted on a banner.

The fireworks display will begin at 9 pm Saturday night, rain or shine.
