It’s been a rough Christmas for the Kentucky State Police. Two troopers assigned to the Pikeville Post have died and now another trooper has been severely injured after being hit by a car.
Trooper Billy Joe Caudill was investigating an accident on US 23 last night when he was hit by a car driven by a 16-year-old boy. Caudill suffered multiple injuries.
He’s reported “stable” at Pikeville Medical Center.
State Police across the Commonwealth are mourning the loss of State Police Detective Joey Howard.
Reports released this morning say he died of a heart attack at the age of 45. Howard was found unresponsive in his home in Regina, Ky., on Christmas Day. His friends say he’d just gotten engaged.
Visitation for Howard will be at Hall Funeral Home in Martin today and tomorrow. Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Fri. morning, Dec. 29, at James Duff Elementary School in Eastern.
The first tragedy shook Kentucky State Police when Trooper Jonathan Leonard died in a car accident last Tues., Dec. 19, on US 119 in Sydney.
State Police Commissioner Jack Adams said Leonard was responding to a non-emergency call and was turning to meet another trooper on the median when the crash happened.
