State to Hold Local Remembrance for President Ford

The nation's 38th president was remembered for his modesty and for leading the country out of the turmoil of the Watergate scandal.

It took some in line on Dec. 31, 2006, about an hour to pass through security checks and make their way past President Ford's casket. Ford will lie in state for two more days before his funeral service at the Washington National Cathedral on Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2006.

President Bush ordered all government agencies to close Tuesday in observance of President Ford's death. The U.S. Postal service made the announcement Friday, Dec. 29, 2006, that they won't be delivering mail on that day.

Meanwhile, the state will host it's own ceremony on Tuesday in remembrance of President Ford. State Employees, members of the Kentucky General Assembly and visitors to the capitol wishing to pay their respects to former President Ford will have an opportunity to do so during a ceremony in the rotunda. A prayer service will take place at 1:30 p.m., and at 4:30 p.m. Governor Ernie Fletcher and University of Louisville President, Dr. James Ramsey, will lead a remembrance gathering in Miami during the U of L reception at the FedEx Orange Bowl.
