Sago Mine Disaster Anniversary

Jan. 2, 2007, marks a somber occasion. It's been one year since the Sago mine disaster that claimed the lives of 12 miners.

In the wake of that tragedy lawmakers rushed to adopt new safety measures, rescue chambers and emergency breathing devices. Safety measures that largely have not taken effect, and could be delayed two more years until federal requirements kick in.

Reports suggest safety improvements seem to be stalling altogether for the 46,000 people working in the nations underground coal mines, although this anniversary is a reminder of the safety issues in many states this new year.

ABC's John Donvan spoke to the families of the miners who lost their lives about that dark day and the year that followed. To view his interviews click on the video link at the top of the page.
