Mounds of dirt and bulldozers are just the beginning of a new era for L.T. Smith Stadium.

Since 1968, the stadium has been the home of Hilltopper football. Now Smith Stadium is in beginning its own season - one of change.

Two weeks ago, pieces of the track that surround Jimmy Feix Field began to be dug up. Renovations for the half of the stadium that already exists are soon to begin as well.

"We are about a month away from going to bid on the east side renovations, where we will completely renovates that," said Western's Craig Biggs, associate athletic director.

Biggs also said those renovations to that side of the stadium shouldn't affect Topper fans on game day. "The existing side, when we go to renovation on it, it'll be mostly interior. It won't be a lot of the areas that are fan-related."

The west side of the stadium is the part that has yet to be built and will be worked on for the next 18 months.

"The west side that's under construction right now will continue throughout the season so we will kind of work around on that side of the project of the football season," Biggs said.

In addition to a full side of seating, the new half of the stadium will contain locker rooms, weight rooms and club levels.

Within the next few weeks the current scoreboard and light structures will be taken down and replaced with new ones before the start of the 2007 season.

According to Biggs, as of right now the project is on schedule and should be completed by the fall of 2008.
