Tracy Moser, a retail store owner in Greenwood Mall for nearly four years, has grown accustomed to having her store open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. every Friday and Saturday. However, last week that changed.i>
Greenwood Mall sent a memo out last Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2007, telling all stores that they would now have to remain open an extra hour on Friday and Saturday nights, as well as opening two hours earlier on Saturday morning.
"It does stretch our budget a little bit. We have to add 4 hours that we didn't have to before. If we do see the sales come in then it won't hurt us at all," Moser said.
Despite having to extend payroll, Moser is okay with the change. Some of her fellow store owners don't feel the same however.
Some 10 to 15 stores are boycotting the change by operating at the same schedule they always have and not the newly mandated times. This is a move that negatively affects Moser's independent retail store.
"Its going to hurt us more because the corporate stores and the majority of stores are not staying open. Customers are confused. They don't know if the mall's open or closed or they feel uncomfortable going into a store because they feel that we're waiting for them to leave so we can close," Moser said.
Moser also said she turned down an opportunity to protest along with these corporate stores because she can't afford to be fined by the mall, which is a part of the lease she signed when she opened her store.
"We signed a lease saying that they may or may not change the hours but we had to comply so we all signed it and agreed to comply with any mall changes," Moser continued.
In a statement to WBKO, Greenwood Mall said the move was made as a result of mall shoppers' desire for extended hours as well the mall's need to stay competitive with other outlets.
Moser said she's not sure how the situation will turn out but she's anxious for a resolution.
