Sumitomo Plant to Close in 2004

After years of service, some Sumitomo employees find out they're being cut.

Sumitomo Electric Wiring Systems has announced it will discontinue cable reel manufacturing at its Smiths Grove location in Scottsville. As a result, a company spokesperson says approximately 160 jobs will be lost, which happens to be the same number of workers currently employed.

Those jobs will be phased out between March and September of 2004, when the plant will stop production for good.

Eligible associates will receive a retention bonus and benefits package. Hourly associates will receive a base pay increase in 2004, before they are let go.
