Kentucky's High Prescription Average Can Be Dangerous

Kentucky is one of several Southeastern states ranking above the national average for prescription drug use.

Kentucky averaged more than 15 prescriptions per person. The national average is 11. Tennessee leads the nation in prescription drug use and ranks second in prescription drug spending. Tennessee's prescription drug use is more than 17 prescriptions per person. West Virginia averaged 16.

According to The Institute of Medicine, medication mistakes injure more than 1.5 million Americans per year. The drug errors and prescription overuse can result in accidental poisonings, drug addiction and death.
