Children First: Full-Day Kindergarten Funding

By  |

With the start of the general assembly one of the topics that is expected to be discussed this session is full-day kindergarten.

Currently in Kentucky the state only pays for half-day programs. That means schools that have full-day programs have to pay the difference for the extra class time. Right now there are more than 500 schools with full day programs but there are still more than one hundred kindergarten programs that meet for half a day.

Russellville City Schools is looking into whether to go full-day. At the end of this month a committee with the schools will present a report to the school board. It's based on whether or not it's feasible for the system to go full-day. If they do decide to go with the all day program they will most likely have to make four new classrooms costing at least twenty thousand dollars each to furnish alone.
