Teens in Cave City are now under a new curfew. It was unanimously approved Monday night by the city council. Reports of children staying out late and, in some cases, vandalizing property led council members to the decision. Some students are not pleased with the decision.

Patricia Sturgeon says, "The new Cave City curfew, I totally disagree. It be our opinion to go out at 11 o'clock, 12 o'clock with our parents' permission too."

Some teens at Caverna High School aren't happy with the city council's recent decision to impose a citywide curfew. But the mayor of Cave City says it was an easy decision.

Mayor Bob Hunt, says, "We've been having children at night ages roughly 8-14 been out anywhere from 11 o’clock at night unsupervised and we just felt like it was time to pass a curfew."

The new curfew will have anyone under eighteen in on weeknights between the hours of 11 p.m and 5 a.m. And on weekends they have to stay in from 12am until 5am.

Mayor Hunt says some parents’ lack of responsibility prompted the curfew.

Hunt says, "And the council felt like it needed to be done after police had reported numerous times they saw children out and asked them to go home. Sometimes the children would say- nobody's home."

Now if parents don't take responsibility for their teen’s whereabouts they can face fines up to $500 or up to six months in jail. Students say it stifles their individuality and they should be allowed to stay out.

Patricia Sturgeon, "To have fun. To experience life for itself. To basically live life to the fullest.

But for the members of Cave City council, it's a different story.

Hunt says, "If they're not out there on the streets at that time of day, well then, that's something you don't have to deal with."
