Safer Cigarettes

A State House committee has approved a measure that would require tobacco producers to sell only fire-safe cigarettes.

A safety advocate told members of the House Licensing and Occupations Committee that Kentucky has the nation’s ninth-worst fire death record.

The legislation drew no opposition in the committee. If passed, the safer cigarette would be wrapped with thin bands of paper that slow down the burning cigarette. A cigarette left unattended will extinguish when the burning tobacco reaches one of the bands. Six other states have passed similar legislation.
