Children First: Writer's Workshop

By  |

The Writer's Workshop program has been thriving in a few Rich Pond Elementary School classrooms for years, but it just went school-wide this year.

The program gives students 1 hour each day to focus on writing, then puts them in the "Author's Chair" to read their writing to fellow students, and receive constructive criticism.

Gail Taylor, a 2nd grade teacher at Rich Pond, says the time and feedback "are the greatest gifts a writing teacher can give a student." Students in Mrs. Taylor's classroom hear three positive comments and an "I wish" critique for each piece of writing.

Taylor says teachers across the school report positive results in their efforts to improve students' writing skills.
