A former Republican congressman known for his blunt rhetoric and service to Kentucky, has died.

Marion “Gene” Snyder was 79 and living in Florida at the time. Snyder served 11 terms in Congress. He served as a mentor to most of Kentucky’s current congressional lawmakers, including Senators Jim Bunning and Mitch McConnell. Gene Snyder also has a stretch of highway named after him in Louisville.

He was elected in 1962 from Kentucky’s 3rd district but lost a re-election bid. He ran again in 1966 in the 4th district and held the seat for the next two decades before helping Bunning keep the seat in Republican hands.
