People across the state are having mixed emotions about proposed legislation making all cigarettes sold in Kentucky “fire safe.”
The legislation was inspired by a Bardstown fire that claimed ten lives. Investigators say a lit cigarette dropped on a chair, is responsible for the blaze.
“Fire safe” cigarettes would extinguish when dropped or not inhaled for a certain period of time. A spokeswoman with the National Fire Protection Association said actions should be taken to prevent these kinds of tragedies in the future.
The state Senate has passed a measure requiring the cigarette conversion. A similar measure has cleared a House committee.
