Ft. Campbell Solider Not Guilty

A U.S. soldier awaits his final sentencing to see if he is eligible for parole.

A military judge has approved sergeant Paul Cortez’s guilty plea to the rape and murder of a 14-year-old Iraqi girl and the slaying of her family but in a court-martial last night, Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2007, the judge found Cortez “not guilty” of premeditated murder and conspiracy to commit premeditated murder.

Under the terms of his agreement, Cortez will receive a life sentence if he cooperates fully with prosecutors and testifies against three other soldiers. He would also receive a dishonorable discharge with reduction in rank.
